I Spy a New Founder Plaque!

At the January PD, UTS Principal Dr. Leanne Foster addressed how plaques around our building recognize donors who secured the future of UTS with their gifts – including all UTS at the third floor staff room! There is a new plaque outside the art rooms that tells the story of William Christopher Ballyn ’51 who loved art as a UTS student and, well, check it out for the rest of the story!

Summer Camps

UTS Summer Camps are one-week programs featuring an academic-adjacent theme. Campers range in grade from 3 to 9 and run with the support of UTS student counsellors and MT candidates. This year, summer camps will run during the month of July. We aim to run several camps across a range of fields including science/engineering, math/coding, creative expression, debate/public speaking and special interest. Programs should build towards a showcase for the families at the end of the week or include take-home components.

Additional compensation is provided to camp leads. This opportunity is open to both returning and new teachers. Interested in running a camp? Please email Sean Hayto at sean.hayto@utschools.ca and Charline Wan at charline.wan@utschools.ca by Monday, February 9 with:

  • Your proposed camp theme

  • Intended grade range (camps should span three or four grade levels)

  • A descriptive paragraph on the camp (i.e. what campers will learn and do, as though you are marketing this program to families)

  • What specialty materials, equipment, spaces or tools your camp program may require (e.g. laptop, use of lab equipment, etc.)

  • Which weeks in July you are available to run the camp

    • Week 1: July 6-10 (5 days)

    • Week 2: July 13-17 (5 days)

    • Week 3: July 20-24 (5 days)

    • Week 4: July 27-30 (4 days)

  • A description of what students would show and share on Friday OR a description of take-home tangibles

Are you curious to know more but are not yet ready to commit? Visit Sean or Charline for a no-commitment conversation!

School-Wide Student Equity and Inclusion Survey January 28

ADMINISTERING: This year an assembly schedule has been implemented to administer the Equity and Inclusion Survey. This will minimize the impact on classes (as previously it ran in lieu of a class). Block D teachers will begin the survey after their class. All classes will begin the survey at 10:55 a.m. starting with a school-wide announcement.

Additionally, Block D teachers are asked to do the following:

  1. Post information for your Block D/Wednesday Period 2 class on the day before as found here.

  2. Start the survey with your Block D students on January 28. You will be relieved of the survey supervisory duties by an assigned teaching or admin staff as found here.

If you know that you will be away on this day (teaching Block D or not), please let Main Office know as soon as possible.

To learn more on what the AEDI has been supporting and working on to improve our school’s climate, culture, curriculum and community, follow this link.

CHANGES TO THE SURVEY: UTS changed the survey management system to Survey Monkey. This primary reason for this decision was data security as Survey Monkey will house UTS data on Canadian servers. Panorama Education (former survey administrator) has given UTS permission to use its questions. This will allow UTS to continue to evaluate changes to students’ experience over time.  Additionally, we have added questions:

  • To understand the experience of students with disabilities in our community (as advised by students).

  • To understand where discrimination is happening in the building or beyond  (as advised by students).

All multiple-choice questions are forced answers, although options for UNSURE and PREFER NOT TO ANSWER are included in each of these questions. All open-ended questions remain optional.

National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia

Students will be explaining why Canada marks this day and will read the names of those who died and were injured as a result of the shooting.
